Near the earth's surface
are a variety of unconsolidated materials such as water,
soil, and the so-called weathered zone.
The contrast between these near-surface materials
and the petroleum reservoir rocks below
is often severe enough to produce
a bewildering variety of near-surface resonances.
These resonance phenomena are not predicted
and cannot be explained
by the methods described in previous chapters.
