Day Hikes Around Monterey and Carmel: 77 Great Hikes
By Robert Stone. A nice sampling of area hikes. Nice coverage of Manuel Peak hike, though most are easier.

Our friends James and Liz were kind enough to invite us to go camping at a sought-after campsite in Julia Pfeiffer-Burns State Park, south of Big Sur. The campsite was fantastic--perched precariously on a cliff 100 feet above the ocean, yet in the shade of a dense fir forest.

The highlight of this park is McWay Falls, which drops about 50 feet, directly onto the beach. We also hiked up the canyon of the stream which feeds the waterfall, and onto an overlook of the ocean. As the crow flies, the distance to the sea from this overlook is approximately 1/2 mile, with a vertical drop of nearly 2000 feet. The steepness and height of the topography distinguishes the Big Sur region from other places along the California coastline.

In June, 2003 Kim and I returned to JPBSP with her parents. We did the waterfall and the overlook via the Ewoldsen trail. Nice as always, only this time I brought the digicam and took a few panoramic shots. Enjoy!
